Somebody Had To Do It

The project know as “Somebody Had to Do It” was initiated by AAERO with funding from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the American Friends Service Committee. The project later moved to Claflin University as its Director, Dr. Millicent E. Brown joined the faculty in the Department of History and Sociology. "Somebody Had To Do It" is a children’s retrospective on the process of school desegregation in the United States. By identifying, interviewing and documenting the recollections of the first African American children to attend formerly all-White schools, this research fills the void between accounts of historical events, institutional roles, and leadership and the analyses of educational and social policies.
